George Kowbel

George was born April 16, 1921 in Melville, Saskatchewan, passed away December 28, 2011 at the age of 90 years.  Served in the RCAF 1940 to 1945, serving overseas.  In 1942, he married his hometown sweetheart, Mabel Trueman.  In 1952, he started work in the BC Forest Industry, and was an active Trade Unionist, serving as a Union Official for the IWA Local 1-217 for over 25 years.  In the 1960’s, he served successfully as Campaign Manager for such notables as Tommy Douglas and Tom Berger in BC.  In January 1973, was appointed as a Commissioner to the W.C.B. of BC.  In July of 1978, appointed by the Vancouver Municipal and Regional Employees’ Union as their business manager in the City of Vancouver, serving until October 1984, when he retired.   George is survived by his wife Mae of 69 years, son Gordon of Vancouver, daughter Patricia of Coquitlam, brother Alex of Hawaii, and sister Mary of Saskatoon.  No service by request.

 

Louis Valente

Louis was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 12, 1928 and he moved with his family to Canada at the age of 3. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of my loving husband, dad, papa and uncle. With his children who never left his side it broke our hearts to lose you on December 29th. Louis you did not go alone because part of me went with you  honey. Louis will be greeted with a big bowl of pasta and a glass of wine by his parents, Patsy and Angie;  brother Remo; sister Gloria and other family members and friends who have gone before him. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 59 years; children Louis (Sheryl), Lisa (Greg); grandchildren David, Jennifer, (Trevor), Victoria and Steven; great grandchildren Aiden, Lauren and Benjamin; brother-in-law Ted Smith and sister-in-law Catherine Valente. Louis’s contagious humour and one-liners will be missed by his nieces, nephews and many friends including “The Gang” –  Ramon, Bebe, Duke, Anita, Pat, Cookie, Ernie, Millie and Danny. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church, 3860 Triumph Street, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, please take a friend for lunch and toast to Louis. Guido Rasera

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Guido Rasera, beloved father, grandfather and brother, on December 29, 2011 at the age of 85 years.   Guido is predeceased by his loving wife Lina (1998); sister Liliana (1959). He will be greatly missed by his son Franco (Debbie); daughter Anita (Antonello); grandsons Joshua and Benjamin; and brothers Arrigo (Mary) and Ennio (Elena).

Guido was blessed with a love of life and many wonderful friends. Thank you to everyone who supported him in the last year.  Special thank you also to the staff at Burnaby General for your care and support.   Prayers will be offered Tuesday, January 3rd at 7:00pm from Sacred Heart Catholic Church 525 Campbell Street, Vancouver where the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 4th at 11:00am. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, and grandmother. Born June 2, 1925 in Fragneto Monforte, Italy, mom passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 86, after a long and courageous struggle with dementia. Mom was predeceased by her husband Antonio, brother-and sister-in-law Armando and Rina, nephew Robert and siblings in Italy. She is survived by her son Angelo (Brigit), daughters Luci, Elaine, Lia (Steve), grandchildren Nicole (Leon), Tia, Danielle and great granddaughter Adriana. Mom will be lovingly remembered by many nephews, nieces and friends both in Canada and Italy. The family wish to thank the staff at Burnaby General Hospital and Normanna Rest Home for their care of mom. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and nonno. After a short battle with cancer, he passed away peacefully with family by his side. She is predeceased by her husband Luigi, sisters Maria and Concettina, and brother Domenico. Ferminia was born on June 3, 1918 in Carrufo (Villa Santa Lucia) Abruzzo Prov. Aquila, Italy. Passed away peacefully at Renfrew Care Center, Vancouver on December 13, 2011 at the age of 93. She is predeceased by her husband Francesco, her brother Rondanino Palumbo, and her sister Vittoria Celli. She is survived by, and will always be loved by, her son Onello (Concetta), grandchildren Francesco, and Nadia (Enzo), two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Sincere thanks to the staff at Renfrew Care Center, especially to the 3rd floor Nurses and Care Aids for their consistent loving and compassionate care of Ferminia (Nonna Mina).
