Katherine Joan “Kitty” Heller

HELLER, Kitty Well-known Vancouver labour lawyer and arts supporter Katherine J. Heller – Kitty to her family and friends – died at her home on January 20th, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. She was 67. Kitty was born September 30th, 1943 in Vancouver. Loving daughter to Edwina and Paul Heller of Vancouver BC, devoted sister to Irene Bettinger of Kansas City MO, proud aunt to Dana of Seattle WA and to Lori and (Jeff Francer) of Washington DC. She completed her undergraduate studies at Swarthmore and received her Masters in International Relations at the University of Toronto. Her distinguished professional life included five years in the Canadian Foreign Service. She received her LL.B. from the University of British Columbia in 1976 and served as law clerk to the Honourable Chief Justice John Farris of the B.C. Court of Appeal. Specializing in labour law, Kitty became a Partner at Russell & DuMoulin (Fasken Martineau DuMoulin) and then at Owen Bird. In 2005, she established her own practice, working in the area of human rights complaints and harassment investigations. Kitty made significant contributions to art and culture in British Columbia and Canada through her work on numerous Boards, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Vancouver Holocaust Centre Society. She also gave her time and energy to many small not-for-profit groups that were struggling to survive. Kitty will be remembered as a generous supporter of the arts and an incredible mentor to people from all walks of life. Generations of friends, young lawyers and the children of her friends and relatives all came to her for advice about their lives and careers. Kitty was a unique individual and a special Vancouver voice who enriched our lives with her laughter, her love, and her generosity of spirit. She will continue to do so through the many memories and stories carried by her wide and wonderful circle of family and friends. A Celebration of Kitty’s life will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at the Vancouver Art Gallery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Vancouver Hospice Society (Kitty Heller Chat Room) or a charity of your choice.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Carey’s sudden passing at 53 years of age. A proud father and devoted husband, Carey leaves behind his wife Ann, and his precious daughter Katie, the absolute light of his life. His kind, gentle, fun loving nature and sense of humour will be deeply missed. Predeceased by his father Ken, Carey also leaves behind his mother Edna, brothers Rick (Marilyn), Greg (Liz), and Gene. He also leaves many nephews and nieces who will miss his adventurous, childlike spirit. Carey was born and raised in Kimberley, BC where he developed a love for mountains and the outdoors. His favourite childhood memories included skiing at North Star, hiking in the St. Mary’s Valley, and playing basketball, bocci and rugby. Carey worked as a Bodyman for Coast Mountain Bus Company in Burnaby for the last 21 years. Known to his colleagues as the guy to go to if you needed help, Carey was an outstanding craftsman and tradesman. He loved kayaking, rock climbing, drawing, painting and being with family. His most treasured moments were building things with Katie. Their many sandcastles, beach forts and rock castles will continue standing in all of our hearts. It is with great sadness that the family of Salvatore Tomassoli announces his passing. Salvatore was born in Gubbio, Italy. He was predeceased by his father Raffaele, mother Maria Palma, and his brothers Pasquale, Fernando, Gino and sister Iolanda. Salvatore will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years Matilde, children Anna (Antonio) and Raffaele (Lydia), grandchildren Annunziata (Steven), Stepfanie and Samantha and great grandchild Alessia. He is survived by his nieces and nephews in Italy. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Jude’s Catholic Church 3078 Renfrew St. Vancouver, BC followed by entombment in the South Mausoleum at Ocean View Burial Park. August 19, 1928 – January 25, 2011. Ruth passed into glory on January 25, 2011 at Vancouver General Hospital. Ruth is predeceased by her husband Jake, sister Elsa, and brother Oscar. She is survived by her son Lyle (Connie), grandson Jayson Nordheimer, and her daughter Sheryl (Chuck ).
Ruth led an active church life and loved to cook, bake and entertain family and friends.
She lived at the Broadway Pentecostal Lodge for the remaining years of her life and courageously fought many health issues, special thanks to the dialysis unit at VHG for their warm care and support and to Broadway Lodge for their care and love.
Ruth became “Mom” to a special group of friends; her tenacious personality and love of life will be missed , she will be fondly remembered.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday Feb 1, 2011 2:30 PM at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Those wishing to honour Ruth’s memory are asked to make donations to the Canadian Bible Society.

Annie was born in Burnaby, B.C. to Harry and Ethel King, the eldest of 3 children and passed away at Burnaby Hospital. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jim, on January 03, 2009, sister Edythe, brother Harry, brother-in-law Harry and sister-in-law Audrey. Annie will be sadly missed by her sons Bob (Edith) David (Linda) and John (Patricia), sister-in-law Doreen and brother-in-law Bob, grandchildren Kathy (Rick), Cyndi, Jim (Kerris), Karen (Chris), Jennifer (Kirby) and Joe (Charish) and 8 great grandchildren. She was a beautiful, vibrant woman who lived life to the fullest. She loved to dance and often related how other dancers on the floor stopped, to watch her and Dad dance. She also enjoyed travel, golf, bridge, jazzercise, swimming, theatre and ”lunch with the Inman bunch” (school friends). Annie worked at Sears Metrotown and loved meeting and helping people. Annie and her husband raised their 3 sons in a house on Silver Avenue in Burnaby (now Metrotown). A special thank you to Fairhaven Nursing Home, Burnaby, B.C. for the wonderful care they gave to our mother for over 4 years. A Celebration of Annie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Fairhaven Nursing Home, 7557 Sussex Street, Burnaby, B.C. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Violet Cecelia Brendzy on January 19, 2011 at the age of 87 years. Born in Tottenham England on May 2nd, 1923. Violet served in the British Driving Core during WWII, where she met her husband, George. After the war, they moved to Winnipeg, and eventually to Vancouver. Even though she was busy raising her five children, she took time to enjoy the family cabin, square and round danced, was a top Avon salesperson, and spent many winters travelling in their RV. She is predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Charlotte, and her sisters Ivy, Florence and Emily. Violet will be remembered with love by her family: husband, George; children; Russ (Carol), Ken (Delores), Bruce, Ray (Christine) and Barbara (Marcel). Grandchildren; Aaron, Ty, Cara, Crystal, Ryan, Matthew, Nicholas, Caitlyn, Cory, Marc, Sean and Pascal. She is also survived by great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, January 26 at Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel 4276 E. Hastings Street, Burnaby, BC. A reception will follow.
