Don will be missed by is loving son Craig, daughters Kim (Michael) and Shawn (Tony) and his cherished grandchildren Elliot and Lucas. Don was born in Hodgeville, Saskatchewan and was very proud of his prairie roots but Vancouver was his home. Don had a radiant personality, sense of humour and love for life. His philosophy was simple it is not about winning but how you played the game and he taught all of us to live this way. He instilled strong values in his children and grandchildren that will carry on through out our lives. He was blessed to have life-long friendships and loved sharing stories from the past especially with his lunch buddies who remained loyal and supportive. He loved to be surrounded by family celebrating holidays and hosting bocce tournaments. He had a passion for sports whether it was coaching his beloved Ex-Brits, playing golf or watching hockey. Above all Don loved to hold court and regale us with stories. The happiest day of his life is when he married his beloved Pam. They were a team and their lives were filled with love and adventure. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 4 from 12 Noon to 3 p.m. at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course – 7600 Halifax Street, Burnaby, B.C. 604-421-8355. Jan was a very generous and caring person who reached out to those in need. She strongly believed that God had plans for her after her death, and this faith sustained her throughout her illness. A very creative person, she took great delight in using her many talents to make gifts for friends and relatives that called for her knitting, embroidery, sketching, and jewellery design skills. She was also a gifted writer. During her illness, she kept in touch with family and friends by writing a Journal. The emails for this Journal captured her thoughts and feelings as she moved through the different stages of this disease. She dearly loved to cook for family and friends. We celebrated many a birthday, Easter and Christmas together enjoying one of her delectable meals ,and all of us looked forward to receiving one of her handcrafted Christmas cards. She and Doriano travelled to many parts of Canada and the USA then to Italy for their honeymoon in 2008. Rino Susin
November 20, 2010
Rino Susin passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Vancouver on November 18, 2010. He was born 1922 in Caerano San Marco, Treviso, Italy. Rino worked the land till he was 18 and then began one of the great adventures of his life – WWII. He spent 4 years fighting for his country as an Alpino, twice captured in a Prisoner of War Camp, both times escaping. The second time walking home from Germany to Italy.
His second adventure was immigrating to Canada in 1958. Leaving his wife and children in Italy, he came to Canada to work underground in an Ontario mine. From there he travelled to Vancouver with his Cousin Angelo Susin and the family joined him in 1957, settling in East Vancouver.
Rino was a man of great courage and character, a resourceful provider for his family, doing whatever it took to insure his family had a stable home and were taken care of. He was a reliable friend to many “paesani” and friends in the community. He had great pride of his home, his “radicchio”, his “giardino” and his wine. Rino was very social and active in the community, being a member of his “Holy Cross” church choir, “Trevisani nel Mondo” and his beloved “Alpini Group”.
Rino loved his wife Rita and was very proud of his 5 children and their spouses: Sergio and Debbie, Ferruccio and Rosa, Fiorenza and Winston Carrey, Livio and Jane, Marisa and Anthony Wilson. He believed in them, encouraging them and instilling independence. He loved his grandchildren very much: Scott, Darren, and Shandell; Ferruccio Jr. and Sonia, Devin Carrey, Andre, Devante and Vanessa Wilson. His cousin Angelo and his spouse Anna, their son Giovanni and his spouse Sabrina, have been loving and supportive family members. Special thank you to Louise for her generosity of spirit and kindness to our family.
Rino lived a rich and full life. He was a proud man who loved his Patria Italia and especially in his new country Canada. His life, with Rita, was one of adventure, reliability, family, friends, community and a warm, loving, happy home. For a young man from the farms, “un Contadino” – he did a wonderful job raising his family and new life in Canada. His life, was a great life – a job well done Thank You Papa, we love you very much! The family wish to thank the Villa Carital and staff for their kindness and generosity to our Dad.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday November 24, 11 AM at Our Lady of Sorrows church 525 Slocan Street, Vancouver followed by entombment at Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, BC. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.bellburnaby.com
