Elvira passed away peacefully at Fellburn Private Hospital with her family by her side. She was born in Cervaro, Frosinone, Italy. Survived by her beloved husband Antonio, son Renato, daughter Delia (Gianni), grandchildrne Sandra and Robert, great grandchildren Demetrius and Dominique, sisters Pasqualina (Ernesto) and Angelina and brother Giovanni (Dominika). Visitation for family and friends 3:00 p.m. thru 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4th at Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel, 4276 Hastings Street, Burnaby, B.C. (Parking behind the funeral home – off Pender Street). Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5th at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 525 Slocan Street, Vancouver, B.C. Entombment to follow at Ocean View Abbey. Age 82, passed away November 23rd, 2009 at his home in Burnaby B.C. after a valiant battle with cancer.
Funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Thursday December 3rd at the Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel, 4276 Hastings Street, Burnaby B.C. Interment at the Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, B.C..
Vern was born August 24th, 1927 in Altona, Manitoba to John and Helena Duerksen.
He proudly served with distinction with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry as a Pioneer in Korea, was a member of the PPCLI Association (Vancouver Branch) and a member and supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 148).
He retired from the Chevron Standard Oil Company as a Maintenance Supervisor, after a long standing career working in the Burnaby refinery.
Vern spent a good portion of his retirement building and enjoying his second home in the Mahood Falls area of the Caribou in Central BC. He carved this second home from raw land, creating a place that was shared and enjoyed by family and friends and over the many years, became a permanent member of the Mahood Falls Community
His family wrote: “Vern had loved fishing, hunting and his dogs. He also enjoyed meeting and sharing life stories with everyone he met and always told a good one. Our Dad was a good caring man and will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, undaunted in his belief that the most important thing in life was and remains his family. ”
Mr. Duerksen was predeceased by his beloved wife Clare. Survived by his brother John of Winnipeg, Manitoba, daughters Lorraine Head (Michael), Maureen MacPherson (Doug Turnbull), Christine Whittington (Ian), Cheryl Duke (Marvin) and Janice Christian (Al), grandchildren Brea, Sandra, Karyn, Steven, Jamie, Devan, Robyn and James, and great-grandchild Brooklyn.

After a lengthy illness Maria Cantafio passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on November 20, 2009. Maria was born on June 16, 1939 in Amato, Italy. She immigrated to Canada in 1956 and settled in Vancouver. Maria was employed by the University of British Columbia and retired in 2004 after 37 years of service. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Domenico, in 1990, Baby Thomas Lorenz in 1960, her sister, and her mother and father. Left to cherish her memory are; her daughter Esterina (Nicola); son Pierino; grandson Nicholas; granddaughter Lucia (Andrew); great grand children Allegra and Sienna; brother Luigi (Antonietta); numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Australia, Italy and South America. Maria was a devoted wife and mother and a woman of courage and strength. Prayers will be offered Sunday November 29, 2009 at 4pm from Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, 525 Slocan St, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday November 30 at 10am. Entombment at Ocean View Burial Park. Pallbearers will be Frank Cantafio, Raffaele Marrello, Alfredo Marrello, Enrico Morabito, Peter Cantafio and Michael Cantafio. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the doctors and nurses at Vancouver General Hospital who made this difficult time more comfortable for all involved. The family is also grateful to the home support staff at the Greater Vancouver Community Services, the community nurses and staff at Raven Song Community Health Centre for their care and kindness. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their sister, aunt and great aunt Gina Zanier on Thursday, November 12, 2009. Gina was born in Trail, B.C. on December 01, 1931. Predeceased by her father Giordano, mother Maria, nephew Steven and great niece Kailee. Survived by her sister Diana (Jim) De Biasio, brother Reno (Loretta) Zanier, nephews Brian (Maureen) De Biasio, Pat (Janis) Zanier, Barry (Aileen) Zanier, and Michael (Maria) Zanier, nieces Carol (Kevin) Morris, Lynne (Bevan) Blatchford and Lisa De Briasio and their families. After moving to Vancouver, she maintained her many Trail friendships by frequent phone calls and visits. Family was everything to Gina. She always acknowledged the birthdays and anniversaries of her nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces with phone calls, cards and gifts. Gina will be remembered by all her family and friends in Trail and Vancouver for her loving caring generous ways. She was always there for everybody celebrating the good times and being supportive when ever it was needed. She was our Vancouver “Mom” for all her nieces and nephews who ventured from Trail to Vancouver. She was devout in her religion and this brought her comfort and strength throughout her illness. Gina was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. Father Peter Sordi will celebrate the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 20th at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 525 Slocan Street, Vancouver, B.C. Zlatko passed away peacefully on November 13 at Burnaby General Hospital at age 90. He was born April 8th in Dramalj, Croatia and lived a long and healthy life. He was a successful fisherman, world traveller and gardener. He joins many pre-deceased loved ones, leaving behind family and friends who will gather for a celebration of his life at a private service.
