Marsden Hurley Ross Manthorpe

July 7, 2009

MANTHORPE Rev. Marston Hurley Ross Ross, our Papa, born on July 16, 1921 passed into eternity on July 1, 2009. He will be lovingly remembered by his cherished wife of 65 years, Agnes, his children Marthe (Raymond) Mack, Troy (Rosalyn) and Dahl (Lorelei), his grandchildren Andrew Mack, James (Jessica) Mack, Alexandra (Anthony Hampton), Nicholas, Chanel, and Troy, and great-grandson, Noah Mack. He is also mourned by Manthorpe nephews Alastair (Gaynor), Keith (Mary), and Ian (Christine) and niece Carolyn in England. Ross was born in London, England to Edward and Rose Manthorpe as their third son. He served with the Royal Air Force until D-Day and thereafter as a Commando on the ground until the War’s end. Between 1941 and 1943 he served at Debert, Nova Scotia, with the RAF in Canada, training pilots and flight crew for the war effort. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Agnes Brown, and was welcomed into her family of 6 brothers and 3 sisters. He will be mourned by his Brown family in-laws in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Alberta. While working at DeHavill and after the War, Ross received his highest calling. He attended London Bible Institute in London, Ontario, the University of Saskatchewan, and finally graduated in Theology from Knox College, University of Toronto in 1966. He was ordained into the Ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Canada that year and moved to Coquitlam, BC, where he resided until his death. Not one to take the easy road, Ross joined the Correctional Services of BC in 1971 and served in a challenging, yet satisfying, role as the Chaplain at Oakalla Prison in Burnaby, BC. In his 20 years there, he touched many lives for the good and acted as a respected counsellor and advisor to both the inmates and the staff. Following the finest example of his Lord, he was never afraid to consort with publicans and sinners, tax collectors and outcasts. He served with distinction and will now receive his reward with his customary humility. We will not see the likes of him again, a proud son of East End London, a veteran, a chaplain, and a man of God. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Union Gospel Mission, Vancouver. A service of celebration of Ross’ life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Coquitlam Alliance Church, at the corner of Como Lake Road and Mariner Way in Coquitlam. “There was a man sent from God and his name was Ross…..”
