Thelma Anna Mae Gilliatt (nee Peebles)
May 1, 2009
July 17, 1929 – April 3, 2009It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother. Anna Mae was born in Boston, U.S.A. the eldest of three children. At age 4 she and her younger brother Tom were moved to Nova Scotia to be cared for by their maternal grandparents following their mother’s premature death. Anna Mae moved to Vancouver in the 1950′s, where she married Gerald and gave birth to only child Brian in 1960. Having previously graduated from Truro Teacher’s College in N.S. she continued her studies at UBC and obtained her teaching degree. After retiring from the Vancouver School Board where she worked as an elementary teacher for over thirty years, she returned to UBC to obtain her Masters in Education at the tender age of 69. Anna Mae’s accomplishments are all the more admirable given that she suffered from the debilitating effects of severe rheumatoid arthritis which affected many of her joints since the age of 40. Anna Mae was predeceased by her younger siblings and is survived by her ex-husband Gerald, son Brian, daughter-in-law Grace, grandchildren Matthew and Katrina and extended family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 9th at 1:30 pm at Willingdon Heights United Church on Parker and Madison in Burnaby. A burial of the ashes beside her mother in Hopewell, N.S. will follow in late August. In lieu of flowers donations to the Arthritis Society would be greatly appreciated. Rest in Heavenly Peace
Helmut Joseph Halfar
May 1, 2009
As the sun rose, Helmut Joseph Halfar aged 74 passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 28, 2009 in the comfort of his own home. Helmut was born on March 1, 1935 in Germany to Albina and Helmut and at the age of 5 he fled to Florida to escape WWII. An accomplished man and self proclaimed “workaholic”, Helmut was a Structural Engineer, architect, developer and real testate mogul – truly the jack of all trades. Although he possessed a “business man” type mentality and showed tough love to his children, he truly was a devoted, sincere and selfless man who sacrificed all that he possibly could for his family to ensure their futures. Helmut will always be remembered for his “Photographic” memory, painfully honest persona and independence up to the day he died. Although Helmut loved life, he always made it known that “nothing in life was free”. During his last years, Helmut’s health took a toll on him as he underwent a triple by-pass, stroke, and numerous heart attacks. Although he put up a good fight, he finally lost his courageous battle with cancer. Helmut is lovingly remembered by his wife Albina, son Joseph, daughter Mary, son-in-law Michael and grandson Zachary. Friends and Family are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Holy Cross Catholic Parish, 1450 Delta Avenue, Burnaby, BC at 12:00 pm with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Burnaby, BC. Condolences may be offered online at www.bellburnaby.com .
