John Miharija
December 9, 2008
Passed away December 4, 2008 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents Josip and Ana Miharija and sister-in-law Billie. Left behind with broken hearts are his loving wife Diane, children Darleen(Derek), Patricia(Steven), Richard(Sandra), grandsons Matthew, Adam, and Nicholas, sister Mary(John), brother Joe, and his many nieces and nephews. John joined the Burnaby Fire Fighters in 1968 where he proudly served until retiring as captain in 1999. John was an avid car enthusiast; however, his favorite hobby was golf. He was a member of the Pitt Meadows Golf Club for many years where he scored his famous hole in one.
John will especially be remembered for his profound dedication to his family. Every Fathers’ Day card about fixing things and being there to help seemed to have been written for John. (But he would have been happy to have the same card reused year after year – financial responsibility was one of his favourite lessons.) He liked to keep busy, and he usually was. Whether for an emergency car repair, a leak in the middle of the night, or a renovation whose time had come, he came without question at the drop of a hat. He gave sound advice even when the right advice was hard to hear or hard to give. His grandsons loved making pancakes and learning to play chess with Grandpa. All of his children are proud to have had a father who had time to be a hero to them after long days and nights of heroic efforts on the job.
The family wishes to thank all of the Doctors and Nurses for their special care throughout the course of his illness including the caring staff in the Burnaby Hospital Palliative Care Centre. A special thank you to all of his friends and Fire Fighters who helped him during his battle. At John’s request there will be no service. Please sign the family’s memorial register. Donations may be made in his name to the BC Cancer Society or the MS Society.
A Fireman’s Prayer
When I am called to duty, God,
Wherever flames may rage,
Give me strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert to hear
The weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently,
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me.
To guard my every neighbour
And protect their property.
And if according to my fate I am to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand,
My children and my wife

Mary Muriel New
December 8, 2008
Mary Muriel New, wife, mother and friend, died peacefully in Burnaby, BC on December 5, 2008 in her 83rd year with family by her side.
Born on the beautiful family farm along the banks of the Mississippi River near Almonte, Ontario in the Ottawa Valley on December 15, 1925 to John and Jean Camelon, Mary grew up with 4 sisters and 5 brothers. It was there the roots of her “can do” attitude took hold. Mary had so many wonderful memories of her siblings who remained close throughout their lives.
Mary moved to nearby Carleton Place to attend high school and live with her aunt and then sister Margaret and family. She would commute the 10 miles home on the weekends by train to Blakeney station. She was a part of history when, on December 27 1942, a troop train collided with Mary’s train which was idling at a station. Many were killed and hundreds were injured; however, Mary was well enough to leave the accident site and walk to a friend’s home.
Upon graduation she worked at McLaren’s Pharmacy. There she met her husband Gerald, romance soon followed and they married in 1947. The railway called him to Montreal and that young woman from rural and small town Ottawa Valley made the big move to Montreal. Just picture her living in Rosemont in the east end and commuting by streetcar to her job at a pharmacy right downtown at St Catherine and Peel Streets.
When David was born in 1950 she really set the wheels in motion for the elements of her life that would bring her joy for the next 60 years – family, friends, her church, her community, gardening, sewing, knitting, crafts, playing bridge and traveling. Steve was born in 1952 and Jan in 1956. In 1969 the family moved to Burnaby. Mary would often talk about ‘back east’ but took to the west with pleasure and loved her life in Burnaby.
Mary made things happen and encouraged her children with her motto: “you can accomplish anything you set your mind to”. This showed up in so many ways. Like her commitment to her children by helping with homework and class projects; making Halloween and pageant costumes; fitting them out in sports uniforms; encouraging all her children into higher education; helping them with home renovations and garden work; and her financial acumen to ensure she and Gerald enjoyed comfortable later years.
This spirit also expressed itself through her commitment to the United Church, first at Rosedale United in Montreal and then Cliff Avenue United in Burnaby. She was a quiet, confident organizer of many church events and a member of women’s groups. The crafts she made to raise funds for Cliff Avenue United at the Holly Berry Fair were loved by all, including her family who were lucky recipients of her special holiday decorations. Mary also showed a commitment to her community as a volunteer at Red Cross blood donor clinics and the elementary school library.
Mom had many interests. She was a great sewer and knitter. She knitted sweaters, toques and mitts that every family member could be proud of. Sewing dresses, skirts, shirts, vests, and coats was never too hard for mom. Her efforts made a big difference in making ends meet in a growing family. Her children loved the stories of how she sewed up clothes from flour sacks as a girl during the Depression. She loved gardening – annuals, perennials, bushes, trees, vegetables, landscaping – she had a green thumb. She experimented with plants, like her rock garden with alpine plants in Montreal or the landscaping along her driveway in Burnaby. She loved these creations. Bridge playing was a joy of mom’s. She had a weekly women’s bridge group for many years and a mixed bridge club monthly. Mary and Gerald loved to travel – to Europe, China, the U.S., across Canada and throughout BC.
Mary loved reading her daily horoscope and lived the honest, confident, upbeat life of a true Sagittarian. Mary never held back her praise or disapproval. She believed it was important to speak her mind, and that confidence set a strong example for all her children, but especially her daughter whom she encouraged to be an independent woman.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Gerald; her son and daughter-in-law Steve New and Jean Wallace and granddaughters Libby and Jocelyne; and her daughter and son-in-law Jan New and David Lowe. Also saddened by her loss are her sisters Elsie Lowe and Ruth McGill and sister-in-law, Doris Camelon; as well as caregivers, Amal, Lucy and Virgie.
Mary was predeceased by her first-born son David, in a tragic accident in 1974; her brothers Russell, Jim, Art, Donald and Murray; and her sisters Margaret Drummond and Kathleen McPhail.
A celebration of Mary’s life will take place on Friday, December 12 at 2:00pm in Cliff Avenue United Church, 1600 Cliff Ave, Burnaby. Spring/summer internment and memorial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery, Carleton Place. An online memorial and condolence site may now be found at www.bellburnaby.com
In memory of Mary and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First United Church, a Vancouver downtown church serving the poor, 330 Hastings St E, V6A 1P4, www.firstunited.ca.
