Iris Ellen Emily Holmes (nee Murray)
Born in Vancouver on August 21, 1927. Passed away peacefully at Burnaby Hospital on November 18, 2008 with family members at her side. Iris is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, David, her three children, Ken, Rob (Maureen) and Mary (Bruce), her sister, Kathy, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many caring relatives and friends. Iris was the first in her family to attend university, graduating from UBC with a degree in home economics in 1949 (Alpha Phi sorority member). She began her teaching career in Duncan, where she met David, a young forestry engineer. They married in 1952 and lived in small Vancouver Island logging communities until relocating to Burnaby in 1965 to the home where she resided with David for the rest of her life. Iris was a kind and generous woman who always looked for the good in others. Her strength of character served her well in more difficult times after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, the illness that took her life some 25 years later. Her courage and determination are an example to us all. Rest in peace, Iris. The Holmes family would like to express their deep thanks to the exceptional team of staff who cared for Iris as her illness progressed and enabled her to continue living in her home for so many years. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute (Suite 210 – 1095 West Pender Street, Vancouver, V6E 2M6).
