Malcolm John (Huck) Wenaus

October 20, 2008

Malcolm John (Huck) Wenaus
October 6, 1922 – October 12, 2008

Predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Irene, in 1992, as well as his brothers, Lester and Vernon, Huck is survived by his sons, Dale and Gary; grandsons, Brody, Andrew and Jordan; sisters, Eileen and Violet; brother, Quintin; and many nieces and nephews.

Huck was born and raised in Saskatchewan where he excelled at school and sports, especially tennis. In 1940 Huck enlisted in the Canadian Army with the No. 3 Canadian Armoured Corps Reinforcement Unit, with whom he sailed on the Queen Mary to Britain for deployment. He served overseas in North Africa, Holland, Belgium, Italy, France and Germany until 1945. Shortly after returning home from WWII Huck moved to Burnaby and, with his brother, Vernon, bought a motel at Barnet and Hastings Streets. In 1949 the brothers, with their father, “AB”, started a small real estate firm, AB Wenaus & Sons and later a construction company, Wenaus Construction, which played a large part in the residential development of the Brentwood and Lake City areas. In 1961 Huck became a Notary Public for Burnaby. He also served as a governor for the Real Estate Institute of BC from 1962 to 1964 and as President of the Real Estate Board in 1965/66. In 1996, at the age of 74, Huck retired from his Hastings Street notary practice to focus on his other passions – telling jokes, playing bridge and enjoying his garden.

Huck was as large as life and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. A celebration of Huck’s life will be held at the Scandinavian Community Centre, 6540 Thomas Street in Burnaby, on Saturday, November 1, 2008, from noon to 3 pm.
