It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother on May 30, 2008. Born August 9, 1918, Llanelly, Wales. Predeceased by her husband; Walter, mother; Annie, father; David and brother; Hayden. She will be dearly missed but always remembered by her son; Reg (Diana), daughter; Donna, grandchildren; Chris, Chad (Wendy), Thomas, Ronnie and Darria, great grandchildren; Michael, Mikayla and Taya, nieces, her life companion; Vern Smith and extended family friend; Trudy. A Celebration of Gwen’s life will be held Friday, June 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel, 4276 Hastings Street, Burnaby, B.C. LUPO, Lucia. Born February 14, 1918 in Vinchiaturo, Campobasso, Italy, passed away May 24, 2008. Lucia left us to be with her husband Alessandro who she has been missing dearly for the last 5 years. Also predeceased by her brothers and sisters. She will be missed by her loving daughter Rosa Fantillo; grandchildren and her dear large family, friends and her sister Teresa of Italy. She had many great-grandchildren and as anyone that knew her or was touched by her would know she was their Nonna as well. Prayers will be offered at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2025 Napier St., Vancouver where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Entombment, The Abbey, Ocean View Burial Park. THRIFT – Donald, passed away at Cottage Hospice in Vancouver on May 23, 2008 aged 73 with friends at his side. Don will be missed greatly by all of us for his wonderful spirit, wide-ranging curiosity and knowledge, gentle humor and wisdom. His positive impact on our community and those whose lives he touched cannot be overstated. Don showed a deep, active concern for the planet and looked after the neighbourhood (and his beloved cats) with quiet care and grace. We are so fortunate to have known Don and his absence will be felt more than he could imagine. Our thanks to the staff and volunteers at Cottage Hospice and Palliative Care at Burnaby General for their care during the past weeks. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 9, 2008 at 10:00am at Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel, 4276 Hastings Street, Burnaby. Don will be laid to rest with his parents at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jan “John” Spyrka. Jan passed away on May 22, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jan has gone to heaven to join his sister, Maria Nowak, and his brother, Stanley Spyrka. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Janina of 39 years, his children, Robert, Alec, Donna (Ryan), his beloved granddaughter, Adrianna, his sisters, Matilda (Mike) and Anna, his brother, Tadeusz, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Prayers will be held on Monday May 26, 2008 at 6:30pm, and the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on May 27, 2008 at 11:00am, both services at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1450 Delta Avenue, Burnaby. Entombment will follow at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.

PONTI—REVERENDJOSEPH(GIUSEPPE)

Born May 31, 1938 in Lissone, Milan, Italy. Passed away peacefully May 18, 2008. Father Ponti was the son of Emelio and Eufrisina Ponti. He is survived by his loving family; brother Valentino and wife Liliana and three nephews, one niece and five great-nieces and nephews. Following his studies with the Scalabrinian Fathers, Father Ponti was ordained in Italy on March 19, 1963. Shortly after ordination he was sent to Vancouver as assistant pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish where he remained until 1968, when he went to Rome for a year of postgraduate studies. Upon returning to Vancouver he was assigned to Our Lady of Fatima (Portuguese), where he built a new church, hall and rectory. In 1978 Father Ponti was appointed pastor of St. Helen’s Parish in Burnaby. While there, the rectory and gymnasium were built and the school was remodeled. Father Ponti was instrumental in the opening of a pastoral and media centre in Vancouver and served as the editor of the well known Italian newspaper L’Eco d’Italia. He was also a program producer and radio talk-show host as well as interim director of the Vancouver Italian Folk Choir. Father Ponti was named the 1992 Man o f the Year by the Confratellanza Italo-Canadese. In 1989 he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish where he added to the parish school and gymnasium. Father Ponti was appointed pastor of St. Joseph’s Parish in Langley in 1992 and built its new church. In 2004 he became pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Affectionately known as father Joe, he was involved in many different activities especially in the Italian community. At the time of his death he was the Archbishop’s Representative to Notre Dame Secondary School, working energetically for its rebuilding. Father Ponti also served as a member of the Archdiocesan Synod and the Presbyteral Council. For many years he was the Archbishop’s delegate to the Charismatic Renewal and Spiritual Director of the Lily of the Valley Curia of the Legion of Mary. Father Ponti was a Judge of the Vancouver Regional Marriage Tribunal. In 2003 he celebrated his 40th anniversary to the priesthood. Visitation will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 2025 Napier Street, Vancouver on Thursday, May 22 from 1:00pm to 6:30 pm, followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Cathedral, 646 Richards Street, Vancouver, on Friday, May 23 at 1:30 pm. The Most Reverend Raymond Roussin, SM and the Most Reverend J. Michael Miller, CSB. celebrants. Interment, Gardens of Gethsemani Cemetery, Surrey, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Restoration Fund or the Notre Dame High School Building Fund would be appreciated. Sincere thanks to Dr. Savage and her team at the B.C. Cancer Clinic for their care and kindness during Father Ponti’s illness.
